If it depends on the brazilian “little oranje” Low-Cost, the only Brazilian airline in the segment, passengers will no longer have to worry about the delay of Uber's to accept a car ride to the airport. This is because, according to the Exame newspaper, the company, together with the group to which it belongs – the Comporte group, closed an agreement with the intention of receiving 250 electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL). If everything goes according to plan, this idea will be put into practice in mid 2025.
The intention is for eVTOL to connect large urban centers to the airports where Gol operates – and vice versa, in a faster and more direct way, reducing not only the waiting time, but also the travel time of a passenger to its airport departure compared to other transport services such as Uber or the famous Transfers.
The aircraft chosen by Gol is the Vertical VA-X4 eVTOL, from the Irish company Avolon. The reason for the choice is that, despite the fact that it is still being certified by Organs regulatory bodies, the model, among all those in its segment, is the most advanced in this process. Furthermore, according to Avolon's Technical Chief, Felipe Campos, “For those on the floor, the noise of eVTOL is practically the same as a refrigerator in the kitchen. And, because of the technology, it hardly needs maintenance and reduces operating costs by 80%”.
Other very interesting characteristics of the aircraft that despair not only the hegemony of transport applications, but also the sale and use of helicopters, is that the new electric vehicle has a range of 160 km and a maximum speed of 320 km/h (it is a “flying bullet-train”). To make matters worse for its competitors, it produces around 100 times less noise on cruise flights.
With a capacity for only 4 passengers, the eVTOLs are not able to meet GOL's plans for regionalization and capillarization of the air network, something that competitor Azul already does with its e190 and ATR, but the company itself admits that, in the future, they may new business fronts emerge, such as the transport of parcels and aeromedical services.
“The possibilities go far beyond the passengers and depend on the group's creativity. But this is not a decision for us, but for Grupo Comporte. Currently, our effort is to make the project viable. As the business plan will still be studied, it is too early to say whether we will really bet on other services”, said Sérgio Quito, chairman of Gol's Operational Safety Council, to the Exame website.
